Back to Kennedy.
I can’t hear him speak, especially in such a condescending and morally superior manner that I don’t think about Chappaquiddick Island.
If you take a moment and read (or listen to) his speech after he left Mary Jo Kopechne to die in his submerged car on Chappaquiddick Island you might find yourself questioning how he can shamelessly expressing concern over anyones morality, honestly or personal courage.
By his own statement, he and his family had participated in the sailing event on the island for 30 years, yet he accidentally drove off the bridge because it was dark and the bridge has an odd angle to it. He’s 30 years familiar with the island, yet not familiar enough to navigate the roadways.
He was comforting Ms. Kopechne and other Kennedy campaign secretaries because they were so upset over the death of Robert Kennedy. That’s all. Nothing more. His wife would have been there, but she wasn’t feeling well.
And, he adds, he doesn’t like the fact that people implied he might have been driving drunk or conducting himself in an immoral manner! He had been at the party and had simply been comforting these ‘girls’ and was simply giving Mary Jo Kopechne a ride.
His conduct and statements over the few hours after he allowed Ms. Kopechne to drown in his car is simply inexplicable. He says he can’t explain it because he doesn’t remember it. His doctors told him it was shock. Yet, he can tell us how he felt as the water rushed into the car, how he got to the surface and how he repeatedly dove down to try to rescue Ms. Kopechne until he thought he would drown again.
He remembers clearly going back to the party and getting his kin folk to come help him. The only reason he told them not to tell anyone else was because he didn’t want to scare the other ‘girls’ who were friends of Ms. Kopechne. His only concern was for them.
He had been much too exhausted to rescue the ‘girl’ he was escorting, but for some inexplicable reason, he dove back into the water, swam across and went to his hotel and slept till the next morning.
The next morning he called his family attorney who convinced him to report the accident.
That all makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? If he says it, it must be true.
The one thing in the speech that rang true, he said:
This last week has been an agonizing one for me and for the members of my family, and the grief we feel over the loss of a wonderful friend will remain with us the rest of our lives.
I suppose posts like this are what will remain with him the rest of his life.
For Mary Jo Kopechne, an ‘Average American’ who certainly didn’t get a ‘fair shake’ from Senator Edward Kennedy.

Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton … have the money, know the right people — and you can do anything and accept no responsibility for it.
Kennedy was trying to hold Alito’s feet to the fire (except he kept mispronouncing Alito) - about ‘dishonesty’ in not recusing himself from a case in 1990.
He said Alito had ’significant’ financial interest in a company involved in the case.
The real story is that he had an interest in a company of the company and when he realized it, he recused himself. The case was reviewed by other judges at the time and no one felt his actions were unethical. Another group of judges sat for the case and came to the same conclusions as Alito.
It’s a non-issue, but Kennedy is trying to get some sound-bites out of it.
AND - he’s trying to accuse him of racism!
This is a man who ‘can’t remember’ what happened the night he left a woman to drown in a shallow pond in 1969!
He’s shameless!
And now, ladies and gentlemen, he is going to write a children’s book. Isn’t that nice?
VW
Hey violence worker - I saw that! Maybe he can put them on the same shelf as Tookie Williams’ chldren books?
Beth,
I agree with you completely and wish I could really “get down” and say some things on my mind but this a family site I am sure.
I hope this remains with him the rest of his life… he got away with something… and only he knows the truth and the whole truth… I have a feeling someday he will have to discuss it with the great creator. Maybe then his money and name will mean nothing — it won’t buy an air conditioner.
I agree Anonymuos.
Wow,
I must thank you for digging up this piece of history, and blogging it.
If there had been bloggers and an internet in the summer of 1969,in MA.
Ted Kennedy, would be a ex-con, probably on parole, but not a Senator.
He let Mary Jo drown, while he saved his own sorry drunk ass.
And got away with it.
But if there had been bloggers, that fat Scotch Sucking Liar (SSL) would be a nothing, not a Senator.
SO, in my mind Ted Kennedy is not a Senator of my Country, he is just a rich bag of wind.
BLOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG ONNNNNN
I love your blog.
I totally agree with anonymous if there is such a place souls pay for herendous acts of cruelty..he will end up there. I liked the comment about the air conditioner. All his earthly money and riches sure won’t be able to buy enough air conditioners where he is going. Why the people of Mass keep electing him and that John Kerry is beyond my imagination. Both of them are undesireables in my book.
