Hollywood seems to be all tingly at the movie Brokeback Mountain. It’s nominated for an Oscar in several categories. It is about two gay cowboys who fall in love. It was designed to ridicule a venerable American institution, the dusty, decidedly heterosexual, badly groomed, gun-slinging, rotgut swilling, cowboy. Of course, this is just the kind of thing Hollywood loves.
Can any of us accept this new paradigm? I’m just not ready to, well, embrace this concept. Call me old fashioned but when I think of two angry cowpokes settling their differences by slapping leather I prefer them to be facing each other. I don’t think I’m ready for an Outlaw Josey Wails. I can’t wrap my mind around a new song ‘Don’t take your purse to town Keith’. It just isn’t right for the town marshal to fill his hand with anything but a six-gun.
I’m horrified at the prospect of a new TV series Have Swatches, Will Travel. It gave me some comfort to know you had to wire Paladin in San Francisco and not Kiki. Marty Robbins has to be rolling over in his grave at the prospect of new words to his song Mr. Shorty and Big Iron was about a cowboy with a large shootin’ iron all right, but it meant a Smith and Wesson and it was in a holster on his HIP. I can do Dances with WolvesÂ, but Dances with Pomeranians, no way.
I don’t want my cowboys to be sensitive, well groomed and immaculately dressed. I want gold dust in their saddle bags not hair care products. The only thing I want in the way of body piercing is a slug from a .44 caliber Colt. Somebody please save us. Wyatt, Doc, Virgil, Morgan, where are you when we really need you?

One thing I am puzzled about.
If you are in the wilderness watching over flocks of sheep, aren’t you a Shepherd?????
Unless I have missed something while growing up, I thought Cowboys rounded up cattle, not sheep????

Does he have a blog?

Very clever. Did you know that “Brokeback” won several Golden Globes last night and “Transamerica” also won a Globe. That one is about a transexual who is a man becoming a woman and who is traveling cross country with his/her teenage son. Typical Hollywood.

The most frustrating thing for me is how Hollywood chooses what is making “a big impact” on America based on what they want to have an impact. They’ve decided that “Brokeback” is changing how we look at movies…but no one went to see it.

I was really disapointed that Heath Ledger did this movie. He was one of my favorite actors.
John Wayne would never have done a gay cowboy flick!

Great. I would add that Gene and Roy sang, but not showtunes.

Oh! My mind just couldn’t wrap itself around this whole concept. I grew up watching John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart taking out the bad bad guys and and…oh I just can’t go on!! My world will never be the same…I’m too golldang visual.

LOL Joan and Carol.
Web-loafer - the ad on TV with them herding sheep is just almost more than I can take! lol
anonymous - no he doesn’t have a blog.
Jane - I think that’s the cause dejour in Hollywood right now. They are really working at making ‘alternative’ lifestyles mainstream. If we were ‘hip’ we’d not have a problem with that!
4thlittleguy - I heard the movie actually came in 2nd from the bottom in viewing last weekend. But to hear the hype you’d think it was a blockbuster. I’m sick of seeing the ads on TV for it. They are hyping it more than any movie I’ve ever seen. There’s an add for it in every ad spot. I have noticed they are showing the ’star’s of the movie with women in the ads the last few days! lol Hypocrites!
Dolphin Fan - I agree - he’s been one of my favorite actors too. It just changes how you view them doesn’t it! Ditto on John Wayne!
Andy - lol - good addition! lol
Yankee Mom - I’m too visual too - It’s not something I want in my head!
Cowboys (or in this case sheep herders) just aren’t suppoed to be sensitive! There has to be a law about it or something!
