Charlie Daniels just got back from Iraq. I just saw him interviewed on TV about his trip. He spoke about entertaining our Soldiers and about their tasks with a real understanding of why we have to fight this war.
I jumped on the internet and went to his website and registered so I could tell him how much I appreciated him going there and trying to get the message out about what our troops are doing. But the system wouldn’t let me leave a message so quickly after registering.
Since I have very little impluse control I’m leaving the message here.
Besides, some of these celebrities that actually DO something for our troops ought to get at least half as much attention as the celebrities who run around kissing Latin American Socialist dictators, slamming the USA and being outraged at how our troops treat people who are trying to kill them.
Back to Charlie Daniels. He made one off-the-cuff statement that caught my attention. He had entertained troops that no one had gone to entertain in something like 11 months.
WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Where’s the Hollywood-we-support-the-troops-just-not-the-war crowd? Why aren’t they doing anything for the troops?
A little entertainment here and there would help give some much needed relief to the troops they love so much. Don’t cha think?
We know they are not sincere in their declarations of support for the troops and love for their country. That mantra has started making me nauseous. ‘I support the troops, I just don’t support this [insert whatever term suits you here - it's usually 'illegal' or 'blood for oil'] war.’ I suppose repeating that mantra makes sticking knives in the troops backs a little less distasteful for some.
So why are there so few entertainers going to Iraq to entertain our troops? Some possible reasons might include:
- Bob Hope is not around anymore for one thing.
- There’s probably not much money in going over to Iraq and entertaining the troops. So what’s the point?
- How much MSM face time does one get for going? I don’t see anyone on TV who’s gone. Just find little snippets here and there about a celebrity who goes to Iraq. So - again - what’s the point?
- Not to mention it’s hot, sandy and probably not real comfortable.
- I don’t know where one would get ones nails done over there.
- What would one do with one’s little dog in the little purse while in the desert?
- Where would my entourage stay?
- A person might lose their career if they speak out in favor of the USA or our troops (sincerely). Just look at what the MSM has done to Mel Gibson for daring to produce a movie that didn’t fit the hollywood agenda. Any photos anyone sees of him since that movie have been the least flattering that could possibly be found. And he’s history in hollywood.
Back to Charlie Daniels - my new love - my Beloved Curmudgeon will understand.
You can read about his trip, his observations, and impressions at his forum on his website.
Thank you Charlie Daniels for taking time out of your life to do something you’ll get very little material return on.
Thank you Charlie Daniels for CARING about our troops. Thank you for understanding what they are doing and why they are doing it. Thank you for understanding whay they are doing for YOU and for all of us.
Thank you Charlie Daniels for having the courage to do what most other celebrities won’t.
Thank you Charlie Daniels for loving America and lending your high profile voice to what many of us in the fly-over country want to say.
P.S. Do you want to take the mother of a Soldier with you on your next trip?? [just kidding]
Here’s a couple more celebrities who quietly help our country.

Actually, I believe Wayne Newton has been doing the USO tours for a few years now in Bob’s place. They don’t annouce them as much as the looney libs announce their hate filled rallies against everything.
Now that you mention it I remember that. But like you said. YOu never hear about it.
Saturday Improperness…
You know what? I think I might to like to take up cigar smoking. Any recommendations?…
Charlie Daniels is great! Love your post about him!!
One of my close relatives has worked for Charlie Daniels for many years. Charlie remains an all-American patriot, and truly decent God-fearing man.
Wayne Newton said in a article in December that the USO is having a hard time booking entertainers because 1) politics and 2) fear. Oh, and apparently Al Franken was in Iraq with the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders in December ‘05, but I can see why Charlie Daniels wouldn’t count him!! To give Franken a very small smidge of compliment, he has been there four times. Robin Williams also can’t stand Bush, but has been to Iraq multiple times.
Others who have performed in Iraq and/or Afghanistan (one or more times): Toby Keith, Chely Wright, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson, Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, 50 Cent, Daryl Worley, Drew Carey, WWF wrestlers, Gary Sinise, Aah-nold, Clint Black, Jewel, etc.
Yeah for Charlie Daniels, Gary Sinese and anyone else who gives of their time to truly support our troops! Great post, Beth
I see Anna Beat me to it on Franken. He actually has gone several times. Although I loathe his politics, the fact that he did that raises my opinion of him a bit. The description I read of his performance said he completely kept politics out of it, too.

Great post, Beth. I had never been a big Charlie Daniels fan before. This changes that! Finally a celebrity who uses his amazing influence for something besides inflating his own ego!
Charlie Daniels went to Ft Leonard wood while my daughter was in Basic. She’s so not into country music but said he was great - I was jealous - lol. I emailed him a big thank you for doing a show there adn I got the sweetest email back! I liked him alot before but after that - he’s the man!
And thanks for the linky love, Beth!

Iraq, US Soldiers Provide Medical Aid
By Army Spec. C. Terrell Turner
CAMP TAJI, Iraq, April 20, 2006 – While the fight against enemy insurgents continues, Iraqi and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers provided medical and humanitarian relief to …
Franken? Franken???? Ugh. Oh my. That means I might have to be nicer about him. I would have to at least give him his due on going to see the troops. That’ll take swallowing hard - but I’m a big enough person to do that …. I think. Well, I might be. I’m going to try to be. I’ll see if I can be at least.
Peace Moonbeam, I knew you knew socialist dictators and all, but I didn’t know you knew real-life redneck, hillbilly American singers!!!! I’m impressed you are so well-connected
I had no idea. I guess I’ll have to be nicer to you too (g).
