The photo to the right is my ankle and foot taken just a few minutes ago. I’m injured and in full self-pity mode.
Note bruising, swelling, discoloration and not at all attractive bandage and brace. Poor me!
It’s difficult to look stunning in a contraption like that!
I went sprinting out my side door this morning with a list of good intentions in my head. Suddenly I was at the bottom of the stairs. It was a none too graceful transition down the stairs I can tell you.
I would like to be able to say that I hurt my feet/ankles kicking jihadists around. It would be somewhat respectable to say some animal ran in front of me causing my fall. But in truth, I somehow just stumbled over my own feet and fell off the bottom stair.
The bottom stair. I didn’t even fall down a flight of stairs. Just one measly stair caused all this.
My Beloved Curmudgeon rescued me. He swept me off to the hospital for x-rays. He brought me back home with the above bandage on, instructions to keep my feet elevated all weekend and heavy pain meds.
I have spent most of today propped up on my couch with my legs up on a pile of pillows in pain and bored to death.
My daughter came home from work and started talking as she opened the door. ‘I had a really rough day’ she said. She proceeded to describe a series of events from her day while putting her keys and miscellaneous other items on a bookshelf. Eventually, she took a breath and looked at me. ‘What’s wrong with you?’ she asked. I held up my bandaged foot and put on my most pitiful expression.
She asked what happened with real concern in her voice. I told her, she laughed and then she said, ‘Mama, you’ll be okay, you can blog all weekend’. That’s actually what she said!
At some point this afternoon, I couldn’t stand another cycle of the same news and started the process of getting up off the couch. Both of my feet/ankles are injured so yes, it’s a process. I finally got up on my feet and hobbled out to the back porch.
Beloved Curmudgeon was sitting out there and it had been a while since anyone had overtly felt sorry for me.
I took a couple of pictures of my foot. Beloved Curmudgeon asked what I was doing. ‘Taking pictures of my foot’, I replied, stating the obvious. ‘For your blog?’ he asked. HONESTLY!!! What’s with the two of them and the blog!
‘Yes’, I replied (I hate being that transparent!).
I asked him if he thought they were sure my ankle wasn’t broken, it feels broken, it sure does hurt, it hurts worse now than it did when they took the x-rays, maybe it’s broken and they couldn’t tell, I can’t stand on it at all and I’m miserable and did you see the rug burn on my knee, that hurts too and there’s another bruise on the side of my other foot and I wonder if my toes are broken cause I can only put weight on the back off my left foot and can’t move those toes without a lot of pain and now my arm is hurting I musta aggravated it somehow maybe trying to catch myself and it’s miserable just sitting around I can’t even sweep the floor and it’s such a pretty weekend and did you see the bruise on this foot and this bandage is getting on my nerves and it’s so bulky and ugly, why do I have to wear it cause it still hurts, what good is the bandage anyway, and how will I get anything done this weekend, am I going to have to spend the whole weekend sitting on that couch, I’ll gain weight.
I was still in mid sentence when Beloved Curmudgeon interrupted me and said, ‘Take another pain pill and go to bed.’
Okay, it was a long self-indulgent sentence - what can I say.
How does one indignantly stomp out of the room when all you can do is hobble? Sigh.
To add insult to injury, my sister is in town and was cooking over at my mothers. She’s a very good cook, btw. So she calls and invites me over. I obviously can drive, since I can’t walk.
I tell her my sad story and she’s appropriately sympathic. However, I had just taken a pain pill when she called.

You didn’t mention how giggly you were on the phone after taking the pain medication. I don’t see how you could stop laughing long enough to write a post about it. However, after talking to you for a few minutes and hearing how wonderfully jolly you were, I wanted some of that pain medicine! By the way, you missed a wonderful dinner - and there’s still banana pudding left, if you can come over tomorrow for some.
June 9th, 2006 at 10:31 pm
Actually - what an awful sister I am. You don’t have to come over to Mother’s to get the dessert, I will bring you some banana pudding tomorrow — and some of that corn salad I wrote about on my blog. But don’t eat them together…

Sorry - hate to be so comment-y tonight. However, I noticed that you at least had a nice pedicure for the photo. he he he! And yes, the daughter and your beloved curmudgeon know you very well.

Some people will do ANYTHING to get those Pain Meds…
Looks like you need it too… Take care, I hope all is well..
June 9th, 2006 at 11:18 pm
Texas Fred! I would never do anything like that! lol
A friend of mine called today and I was complaining about being laid up for the weekend. She told me to look on the bright side that I should get some great meds! lolol
I bet you would have listened to your wife’s endless sentence of complaints and not told her to take more meds! lolol
June 9th, 2006 at 11:30 pm
Hey Beth, so sorry to hear about your mis-hap. I did the same thing about ten years ago, and I know, it is NO FUN. Take those meds hon, they will help you get through the next 48 hours, which can be immensely painful. Sounds like your dear hubby is a great help to you - so enjoy the attention, though I am sure you would of rather had that attention in other ways, but still, enjoy the down time….
I like that red nail polish you little DIVA you!
:) lol……….
Bless you and take care sweetie!

Why is it women want sympathy and men answer with logic?
Why don’t women know they will get logic when seeking sympathy?
OK! I’ll try to help you feel better about yourself.
The part of your leg that is above the bandage looks good. That and the toenails are nice. (Hope that helps.)
Hope you are hopping and not hobbling real soon. - Paul -

Prying - take lessons from Layla as to how to respond
No, really, why is it men offer logic when women want sympathy? Will we ever be able to understand each other? lol
Aubrey - ouch, I’m sorry to hear you had stitches
I’m glad you got your stitches out and I hope your knuckle is better

SEPARATION OF PERVERSION & NORMALCY
June 10th, 2006 at 8:24 am
Funny how the biggest missed step in life often comes from the one place we least expect it to happen. Poor dear, there is no doubt that’s gotta hurt. Both of my sons have broken their small toes within days of each other over the last week. Shared misery makes for shared whining. Just like boys to compete for everything in life (even sympathy).
Your family connects blogging to you, much the same as mine does. Now you know why I took a break. It was the toe-whining that drove me back to it (lol).

I really can empathize with you. Last Thursday I was released from my neon pink cast that I have been carrying around for the past 2 months. I fractured my ankle and tore my tendon about 40% across the length of my lower leg. Boy is my honey happy now… He got tired of the daily hassle with my crutches. One thing though, one learns to get around like crawling, hobbling, using a wheeled office chair to get around in the kitchen. I was able to work from home for a couple of months. Now I am catching up around the house. Take care of yourself… freedom feels wonderful !
