My Daddy was part of the island hopping campaign in the Marshall, Gilbert and Caroline Islands during World War II.
Like most men who have been to war, he didn’t talk about it much so I regret that I don’t know much about his service.
I’ve done some research, from time to time, on what the Marines, and his unit in particular, did in that area at that time. A picture has begun to develop in my mind’s eye about what my father did in the war that is quite different from the funny stories he would tell.
I started a Father’s Day post about him and did some searches on the internet about that campaign. I ran across this picture. It stopped me in my tracks. The guys in this picture are in the pictures my Daddy took.
I think he’s even got a picture with the puppies, but I’m not sure.
I never finished the Father’s Day post. I got to reading about Tarawa and the island hopping campaign and looking for more pictures of these guys in hopes of maybe running across a photo with my father in it.
I didn’t find one, of course. But it was pretty cool to find this anyway.

Having a real connection with history is humbling. Somewhere I have a photo of my father from 1948 leaning into the bulkhead of his ship as the flash of an atomic bomb is used as light for the picture. There will be another generation of children with photos of their mothers and fathers in harms way in the GWOT who will be proud of their connection to history.

What if Jews were Insulted?…
So I get an email (yes from Muslim) complaining that Jews would react just as violently over the cartoon affair earlier this year if they were insulted.
OK. First the Muslim response:…
How is being bright and optimistic a problem for today’s writers?…
From the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, here’s another article telling the readers what to think or believe, something that comics companies today seem to be arguing ad nauseum, and which is simply exaggerated:…

Yet another Muslim went the violent revenge route with a car (see here and here for earlier examples), this one in Long Island. From the New York Post:…
