A MUST read from the Violence Worker
We are a nation of cowards.
We live in our sheltered little homes, with whatever passes for a family today. We go to our jobs and our drum circles and our kids play some form of non-competitive soccer. We drive our SUV and complain about oil prices.
We deify media stars and sports figures. We glamorize thugs and criminals.
More and more kids aren’t even graduating from high school. Probably half of those that do can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application by themselves.
A kid today has to have a cell phone, a computer and a tricked out ride. They have to wear designer clothes and expensive shoes. They want a do-nothing job that will pay the freight.
We are a nation of cowards. We have no moral compass. Gangs are chic and increasingly violent. Many babies are born out of wedlock and Dad is the next guy shacking up with Mom.
We are a nation of cowards. People parade around in our streets in various stages of undress to show their “pride†or hatred for their elected leaders.
We are a nation of cowards. In the days after we were viciously attacked by Islamic terrorists, we were ready for revenge. Some of those same people now think it was our own government that attacked us.
We are a nation of cowards. Instead of securing our borders, our Congress is afraid to do what is necessary to secure our borders.
The Democrats have convinced us that the terrorists will be beaten by law enforcement methods.
We are weak. We are afraid. We have the best trained and best equipped armed forces in the world and we are so afraid that we might hurt the wrong person or destroy the wrong place; we might as well strip our troops of their weapons and armor.
It’s insane.
Wars are not fought nice and cleanly like some video game. It’s pure hell and anyone who’s been in combat will tell you it’s pure hell.
We do not have generals any more. We have administrators. We have managers. We have CEOs with stars on their shoulders.
There are no Pattons or MacArthurs, no Pershings or Shermans. We don’t have military people in charge; we have people who are in the military in charge. If there was a Patton or a MacArthur, they’d never be allowed to be in charge.
We are so afraid someone will hate us if we actually wage war. Instead, we adhere to dated rules of conduct and outmoded treaties that weaken us because our enemies don’t adhere to those rules.
I am subject to deploy as a civilian with the armed forces. I actually have a Geneva Convention card in my wallet identifying my status as a category IV. Cat IV identifies someone as a Major, Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel. If I were to ever get captured, I think I’d throw it out of my wallet.
I think I’d rather be a Category I - all ranks below NCO.
My point here is that no one we are probably going to actually go to war with is either a signer of the Geneva Convention, or has any intention of adhering to it.
It’s time we started fighting wars like we mean it, or just give up completely.
It’s no wonder North Korea and Iran laugh at us and if we quit Iraq, there will be absolutely nothing stopping them.
They will know we are a nation of cowards.

Ben,
I’m talking about the shroud of political correctness that pervades our society and our military.

You miss the point Ben. Most Americans will fight - the silent majority. But as VW says, the shroud of PC that pervades our society and military is strangling us and giving an image of weakness to the world.

Kindness is not weakness; frivolity is not from lack of a serious mind. Driving SUVs and complaining about gas prices is not hypocrisy when one knows there is no connection. Just as a spoiled child can be the most stubborn child and just as the bully often underestimates his victims, so we too are not cowards. We are a quarrelsome and divided people but we are not cowards. We never have been. It has always been that our enemies misunderstand the complexity of a free society and only see their own venal reflection. We are not cowards, we are just a free people expressing our freedom. What others see as a lack of discipline and apparent over protection of offspring is a manifestation of love and concern. It has nothing to do with cowardice. If I were a Moslem or a dictator living outside of the USA I would shudder at the thought of angering the US. That is if I had any real understanding of the American character.
It was people who took their kids to “no loose†soccer and drove SUVs and did all the other thing that you say in your essay make us cowards Sir, who fought back on Flight 93. I point to their action to completely refute you argument. If however your point is that our enemies see us as cowards fine, I grant you that and agree. That is because they chose to see us as that.
I will not change my lifestyle to accommodate the misperceptions of our enemies. If they want to think that we are cowards that is their mistake. Flight 93 showed that to be a lie.

Not all of us are cowards. That wasn’t the point I was making. The are a uncounted acts of individual heroism As in flight 93 and our armed forces. But it isn’t those people running the government. But we, as a nation, vote for the people who are running it and they are the face the world sees and in them, they see the face of cowardice.
