Driving SUVs and complaining about gas prices is not hypocrisy when one knows there is no connection. Just as a spoiled child can be the most stubborn child and just as the bully often underestimates his victims, so we too are not cowards. We are a quarrelsome and divided people but we are not cowards. We never have been. It has always been that our enemies misunderstand the complexity of a free society and only see their own venal reflection. We are not cowards, we are just a free people expressing our freedom. What others see as a lack of discipline and apparent over protection of offspring is a manifestation of love and concern. It has nothing to do with cowardice. If I were a Moslem or a dictator living outside of the USA I would shudder at the thought of angering the US. That is if I had any real understanding of the American character. It was people who took their kids to “no loose” soccer and drove SUVs and did all the other thing that you say in your essay make us cowards Sir, who fought back on Flight 93. I point to their action to completely refute you argument. If however your point is that our enemies see us as cowards fine, I grant you that and agree. That is because they chose to see us as that. I will not change my lifestyle to accommodate the misperceptions of our enemies. If they want to think that we are cowards that is their mistake. Flight 93 showed that to be a lie.
