I’ve been really busy this week and haven’t had much extra time for much of anything, including keeping house and washing clothes. So it took me forever to get ready for work this morning, mainly because I couldn’t find anything to wear.
It got me to wondering about burkas. That would make the choices of what to wear each day so much easier.
I have noticed that some burkas have little tiny decorations sewn into the fabric. They also come in different colors.
Do the different colors represent different denominations or sects of islam? Or is it an indication of marital status? Or can one choose the color that best suits their skin tone? If so, why would one need a color to suit skin tone since the skin tone can not be seen?
I tend to wear ’summer’ shades because it compliments my complexion. Should I choose my shade of green when choosing a burka?
I did think it might be convenient to wear burkas. Just imagine the time saved in doing hair and make-up! Which brings me to wonder what does one wear UNDER the burka?
I also wonder if you have to work out and stay in shape if you wear a burka every day. Of course, you would want to anyway for your own health, but who would ever notice? You could be just a flabby as you could get under there and no one would ever know. Then again, all women would be viewed equally. There wouldn’t be any comparisons as to who is prettier, younger, or whatever. We all be the same (how boring!).
What about shoes? I know they aren’t supposed to let their ankles show. That would be a problem for me since I like shoes. Could we wear heels or would we have to wear something ugly on our feet?
It’s very perplexing.
A lot of the magazine photos of women in burkas show the woman in eye make-up with a seductive look in her eyes. I’ve read that women who wear burkas avoid eye contact with men for fear of appearing seductive. Somehow, I think these images are not realistic. I mean, it’s really hard to view a burka as seductive or attractive in any way. I think that’s a Westerners idea of the mystery of women in burkas.
I think the reality is probably a bit more sad than that. Somehow, I don’t think women in burkas feel particularly attractive. Their hands are probably callused from hard work. Their faces are probably older than their years.
I find myself making fun of burkas, but in truth I feel sorry for the women who spend their lives hidden underneath them. Lord only knows the abuse they endure at the hands of misogynists.
One of the nice things about being female is being attractive to men. Their culture is so foreign to us, maybe they have their own ways of doing that that we can’t imagine. Maybe it’s the little decorations on the burka, or the colors, or maybe they really do wear heavy eye make-up and have perfect skin around their eyes - so they feel attractive.
Whatever. I would wear it with a tiara.

Jo says no to wearing a burka.
