Even though my own is home this year, I cannot forget the families of those who will never be home again for Christmas. When he left, I mourned him. They say that is normal--a pre-death rehearsal, of sorts. But when it really happens...what then? Is it easier? HOW? I hope I never know, but I am ready, knowing the women who have gone before. Strong women who will never hold their husbands again.

This Christmas, I have thirteen small parade flags on my tree. I could not think of a significant number that was reasonable, so I settled on thirteen for the Colonies for which the first great battle in American history was fought. Small tribute, I know, but amdist the festive tree filled with joy, the flags are a steadfast reminder that wihout men like Sgt. Wood, Christmas would not be Christmas. There will never be a Christmas from now on, that I do not have thirteen flags on my tree.
