I have a close friend who just returned form Iraq. He was in Kurdistan. He explained to me that the Kurds have, against all expectation, especially in the State Dept., managed to put aside a majority of their tribal feuds, and set up, what is basically, an independent and nicely functioning autonomous region. In fact, what's most interesting is that the younger generation do not even speak Arabic. They only speak Kurdish. Yes, it's come to the point where the Kurds have so separated themselves from Iraqi society that they no longer even bother with the language. It remains to be seen if this autonomy can continue. Let us hope so.
