President’s Day is set aside to honor the presidents of the United States. Originally the day was set aside to commemorate President George Washington’s birthday. Later, the holiday included President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12th). Eventually, the holiday was changed from Washington’s birthday to President’s Day.
Since I can’t think of anything particularly interesting that has happened this week, I thought I’d make note of seven random quotes from presidents in honor of President’s Day.
- “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.”, George Washington, Jan. 8, 1790
- “The man who can look upon a crisis without being willing to offer himself upon the altar of his country is not for public trust.” Millard Filmore, (1850–1853).
- “If it were not for the reporters, I would tell you the truth.” Chester Arthur, (1881–1885)
- “Our most dangerous tendency is to expect too much of government, and at the same time do for it too little.” Warren Harding, (1921–1923)
- “The only man who makes no mistake is the man who does nothing.” Theodore Roosevelt, (1901–1909)
- “I never saw a pessimistic general win a battle.” Dwight Eisenhower, (1953–1961)
- “The United States is the best and fairest and most decent nation on the face of the earth.” George H.W. Bush, (1989–1993)

After reading the intro to Sunday Seven and it being my first Sunday Seven visit I will add part of a Presidential quote.
“I never had…..”
Fill in the rest of the sentence and guess the President.
I’ll have to give that some thought Sanford! …. (can I google it? lol)
Lovely quotes especially the one of Theodore Roosevelt.
Happy Sunday!
With the “lol”, Beth, that means the question was too easy, huh?
Great quotes. #1 is particularly interesting since a quote by Washington has been used elsewhere against the current administration. I love studying quotes anyway.
Crossing my fingers here I generally get an error message and your page shuts down one me.
This is a nice post.
Blessings
Hi Beth! Thanks for stopping by this morning! I’m so glad you liked the way I did the Seven… I do view it as a chance to give thanks for even the “little” things in life! I set it up as a draft at the beginning of the week — and at the end of each day I go into it and think “what was I grateful for today?” I find that answering that question at the end of each day keeps it fresh in my mind, and makes me really LOOK at the day and thank God right then and there for whatever good has come my way! I LOOOOOVE this meme! I think it’s going to be my favorite one!
Your list of the quotes is nice too!
Wow, I love the quotes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post on President’s day. My Sunday Seven is up and I took a very different path.
Some good quotes, here. I am thankful to be able to stay on your blog long enough to read and comment!
Wonderful quotes. I especially like the one by Millard Filmore. I wish some of our ‘friends’ in Washington would read that quote and take it to heart!
When in doubt about why we must fight to maintain liberty, all we must do is gaze into our past. Great quotes.
