President Ronald Reagan delivered this 1982 speech to members of the British Parliament in the Royal Gallery at the Palace of Westminster in London. It contains one of the more memorable phrases spoken during his presidency, in which he predicts the eventual downfall of Communism, stating that it will be left on the ‘ash heap of history.’ The President eloquently explains the reasons behind his staunch opposition to Communism while encouraging the British to aid in the worldwide struggle for freedom, recalling the success of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the fight against Nazi tyranny. This speech occurred during a period of heightened tensions between the United States and Communist Russia (the Soviet Union) which at that time dominated much of Eastern Europe and was attempting to spread its influence in other countries as well, a provocative endeavor adamantly opposed by President Reagan.

knew ‘then’ what we know know - in reference to the European Union turning it’s back on America in our War on Terror - I do not think he would have told Soviet President Gorbechev to go to Berlin and tear down the wall. Reality alert. Ronald Reagan was a bad actor and worse president. He would constantly grin sympathetically while selling arms to our enemies and cutting vegetables out of school lunches. If he were such a great man why did his kids hate him? It would be reasonable to say they knew the truth about this empty suit. Oh, and he only asked Gorbachev to tear down that wall AFTER it was beginning to fall. Or maybe you think that all the negotiating and military maneuvers and economic sanctions over the previous 70+ years didn’t accomplish anything until Bozo came along! Neocons know NOTHING about history. Maybe you should learn to read something besides Acid Annie’s and Bobble head Bill’s books.

I hope I know something about history and would agree that he ranks high on the list of great presidents. The economic recovery was one thing but the greatest thing he brought back was a pride in being an American. My two fav Reagan books are “When Character Was King” By Peggy Noonan and “Reagan: A Life In Letters”.

Why the hell is there a blue edit in Catherine Prescott’s post? What kind of hypocrisy is that when people can’t voice there opinion with being ridiculed by some gay hater? (I can only assume that’s what you are since I really see no other explanation for sharing you hypothesis on her (unlikely) coming from a two-father family.) That has ab-so-lute-ly nothing to do with anything!

BSC: Aaron, if the United States ceases to be a superpower - than who will protect you in the Netherlands? Will your army? The lifestyle you enjoy, the freedoms of Amsterdam, the anything goes kind of life that is prevalent there, who will keep the wolves away so that you can continue to live the way you wish?

I’m not sure the freedom of the world I live in is worthy of being credited to the USA. (And, incidentally, the Netherlands is not a drug haven filled with hippies as many people seem to think, I’m not saying you do but I’m just making clear that it isn’t.)
