Mike Nifong made “multiple, egregious mistakes” as he pursued charges against three Duke University lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, but not intentionally, his attorney said Saturday in closing statements at the prosecutor’s ethics trial.
“It didn’t click,” Nifong’s attorney, Dudley Witt, said as he tried to explain one of his client’s errors. “His mind is just his mind. That’s the way it works. It just didn’t click.”
The state bar prosecutor, however, said in his closing that Nifong was a “minister of injustice” who wove “a web of deception.”
The North Carolina State Bar charged Nifong, a prosecutor in Durham County for his entire three-decade legal career, with breaking several rules of professional conduct, including lying to both the court and bar investigators and withholding critical DNA test results from the players’ defense attorneys.
He played the race card in order to get re-elected to office. He destroyed numerous lives in order to advance his own career. If he didn’t do this on purpose then he is so incompetent he has no business having any involvement in the justice system.
Many of the blogs I’ve read make this a conservative versus a liberal issue. I don’t understand that. It has to do with justice, honesty, decency and the integrity of our judicial system. I would think all Americans would want our system to work for equal justice for all. It SHOULDN’T be a race issue - either way.
There are so many ethics issues in question that the judge is still reading each charge.
The bottom line is, Nifong is going down. He deserves it. Justice in this country is blind. At least it should be.
He is being publicly censured and the board will now decide if he will be disbarred. Fifteen of the nineteen allegations being read by the judge are being answered with ‘yes’, that he did commit these ethical violations. From the number of charges that he has been found to be guilty of, he’ll be lucky if he doesn’t do time.
I wonder if he now knows how it feels for the Lacrosse players to be accused and publicly humiliated. No, he doesn’t know, they were innocent and falsely accused.
Others are saying …
Texas Fred … he should be barred for life.
I expect a disbarment by Monday afternoon. If they do not do so, North Carolinians have every right to demand investigations into the state Bar itself, and whether it acts for justice or for lawyers.
Freedom Ain’t Free wonders where the Sharptons and Jacksons are.

Ed hit that one on the head, NC should be up in arms if Nifong is allowed to continue to practice law…
Practice Law, damn, I really want someone that already knows how…

Hey Fred
I agree - but from the looks of it, he might find himself doing time.

Absotively! Is that a word? I liked this statement; “Many of the blogs I’ve read make this a conservative versus a liberal issue. I don’t understand that. It has to do with justice, honesty, decency and the integrity of our judicial system. I would think all Americans would want our system to work for equal justice for all. It SHOULDN’T be a race issue - either way.”
Had the case way back then been allowed to be about justice and not the “big bad white man puttin’ the black girl down” as Not-So_Sharpton and the Is That My Kid Jackson piped all over the globe, the evidence would have been forthcoming and the charges dismissed.
Unfortunately, Nifong CHOSE to make it a race thing and clearly it was not. And you are correct but the Leftinistra will not agree. Nifong, a Leftinistra, went along with the current of the winds from the howlings of the racists in the Sharpton-Jackson camps.
Now, he will pay his dues…or there will be hell to pay, I am sure.

Bar: Nifong Was ‘Minister of Injustice’…
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Mike Nifong, the prosecutor who doggedly pursued the now-debunked Duke University lacrosse team rape case, was a “minister of injustice” who wove “a web of deception,” a state bar prosecutor said in closing…

Mr. Nifong deserves more than to be disbarred. Only now as he realizes he’s lost any chance at honor has he resigned as Durham D.A.
If lying to investigators is a crime worthy of jail time, what about deliberatly railroading the innocent in pursuit of political gains? Mike Nifong deserves to go to jail for at least as long as he tried to put innocent men behind bars for.

I really want Mangum in jail…she needs to be held accountable just like anyone else would be.

I’ve been listening for “disbarred for life.” Haven’t heard it yet. I know different states have different laws, but in many, disbarrment is not for life.

But Beth, “justice, honesty, decency and the integrity of our judicial system” and “equal justice for all” are ideals that are anathema to the contemporary FAKE liberals that populate the Left. REAL liberals would hold those ideals at least as highly as real conservatives (like those conservatives who were the Founders and Framers of our nation–See Edmund Burke’s speech before Parliament in March (?) of 1775 for one of the most brilliant statesmen of the 18th century’s take on the conservative ideals of the American colonists).
Hmmm… I see I’ve run down a rabbit trail a bit. *heh*

Ah, found a link to the Burke speech:
http://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/documents/v1ch1s2.html
“…First, the people of the colonies are descendants of Englishmen. England, Sir, is a nation, which still I hope respects, and formerly adored, her freedom. The colonists emigrated from you when this part of your character was most predominant; and they took this bias and direction the moment they parted from your hands. They are therefore not only devoted to liberty, but to liberty according to English ideas, and on English principles…. ”
What the contemporary FAKE liberals of the Left abjure in all its manifestations is this very committment to liberty, as well as to the justice that protects it. Of course, as Dabney pointed out in the 19th century, American conservatism merely follows, puppydog like, in the shadow of “radicalism”–and today’s FAKE conservative politicians are in no way conservatives at all, at all. (And so I run further along the rabbit trail *heh*)
