My son learned today that his rotation in Iraq is extended again. This is the second third extension and will probably mean he will be in the worst, most violent neighborhood of Baghdad for yet another Christmas.

It takes the wind out of my sails, I can’t imagine how he must feel.

It’s especially hard to hear that and then see people acting like everything is normal. There is such a disconnect between the people in this country and the war. Our Soldiers are bearing an enormous weight and everyone else is oblivious to what is going on over there. Oh, you mean there’s a war? You mean there are young men who are having to put their lives on hold for months and years while everyone else is going about their business like nothing is going on.

For about a month there has been a light at the end of this dark tunnel. Now the light gets taken away again.

It’s ashamed we are so determined not to draft the punks off the street and let the military make worthwhile citizens out of them. They could at the least offer a little bit of relief to the guys who are carrying the entire load. This back-end draft is very damaging to morale.

I can’t think of anything positive to write.
