We seem to be having a rash of children suffering at the hands of bad parents. What do you think? Do you think the mother should have left this baby in the pool while she went to get a diaper? Do you think a 13-year-old playing in the area is responsible enough to keep an eye on a toddler who is in a public swimming pool? And why were a mother, a 13-year-old and a 2-year-old at a public swimming pool at 11 p.m.?

It would depend on the 13 year old. years ago, any 13 y/o was capable of watching a toddler…not so much, these days.
As for that late, if it was a community pool, maybe it was less crowded at night. When I was little, the pool on base was always so crowded during the day you couldn’t really “swim”.
Of course the MP’s would come throw us out after dark, but times have changed. It’s a horrific loss…and very sad regardless of the why.
That said, I think bad parenting is a major epidemic…screw the bird flu, ya know? Parents are killing their children faster than any virus they can come up with.
How are you doing, Beth ?

You are right. I can see a scenario in which it would be reasonable to make those decisions. On the other hand, there had been a real epidemic of bad (neglectful/abusive) parenting. I think it’s a societal problem.
AND you are right! Nothing can kill their kids as fast as the parents are!
I’m doing fine - nothing I can really complain about - I hope you are!
