I wish I had found this video yesterday when I was looking for a silent drill team video for the post I wrote about San Francisco refusing to allow the Marines to film there.
I think this really illustrates the reasons why some in San Francisco - or some who inhabit dark corners of the internet - hate the military. You have to remember that these are generally the same people who don’t want children to be graded in school for fear it will hurt their self esteem, or sports to be diluted so that everyone gets trophies. The basic problem with that is it takes away any motivation to excel. Even worse, it damages the self esteem of anyone involved. Self esteem is gained by accomplishing tasks that are difficult, working towards a goal that requires hard work and sweat, pushing yourself farther than you dreamed you could go. You can’t GIVE someone self esteem. You can’t give meaningless trophies or pats on the back when nothing has been accomplished and increase anyone’s self esteem. If the grades are EARNED, if the goal is ATTAINED, if the person finds it within themselves to push another step and another step, they will know that they accomplished something. They will know they earned it. That is what builds self-esteem.
The Marines walk with pride and an air of confidence because of just that. They have accomplished what few can or will. They have pushed themselves and done it themselves. They are Marines.
You’ve gotta love them!! They make me so proud!!
