November 13th is National Memory Screening Day. This is an annual event held every November and is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Its purpose is to promote early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Early diagnosis increases the success of appropriate intervention.

The free memory are coordinated with organizations and health care professionals throughout the United States so there will be a professional in your area participating in the screenings. You can locate participating professionals in your area through the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America website.

I have worked with patients with Alzheimer’s in the past and it is one of the saddest diseases I have encountered. Its especially sad in the early stages when the patient is aware of the changes that are going on with them. We didn’t have these opportunities for early screenings when I was working with patients. I can see what a difference this resource can have on improving the quality of life of those who are diagnosed early and receive treatment and information early on. Family members who are aware of and have a better understanding of the processes of this disease can make a huge difference in how the patient copes with memory and the associated life changes.

In addition to the memory screenings, there are things you can do to help you age successfully. Lifestyle contributes to the health of mind as well as body as you grow older. I encourage you to read the tips on successful aging that can be found at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America website.
