Riley Ann Sawyers - Baby Grace

A little girl’s body was found in a plastic container by fishermen in Galveston Bay on October 29th. The little girl was dubbed, ‘Baby Grace’, but remained unidentified until this week. She had died of abuse and had obviously suffered abuse throughout her short, sad life.

Sheryl Sawyers, a grandmother in Ohio who hadn’t seen her granddaughter in months, saw a drawing of the girl and recognized it as her granddaughter. She put into motion a series of events that would result in identifying Baby Grace as Riley Ann Sawyers. This little 2-year-old girl had suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her mother and step-father and had ultimately died at their hands. Even though positive identification is still pending DNA results, the mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, has confessed and described the end of her daughter’s life.

The girl was beaten with leather belts, had her head held underwater in a bathtub and then was thrown across a room, her head slamming into a tile floor, the mother said in the document. She said they kept the body in a storage shed for one to two months before they put it in a plastic bin and dumped it into Galveston Bay.

An autopsy revealed that Riley suffered three skull fractures, but the cause of death has not been determined.

Royce Clyde Zeigler, II, the stepfather, tried to commit suicide last week. I’m glad he didn’t succeed. He shouldn’t be able to avoid facing what he did to this child who obviously had more courage than he’s got.

I have worked for many years with abused children and have long since quit being surprised at what human beings are capable of doing to their children. I have actively worked against the current trend of returning children to their biological parents no matter what the parents had done to the child. I’ve just seen too much and know that the chances of parents growing a conscious because of ‘parenting classes’ is slim to none.

This couple that murdered this child are obviously stupid and they are also evil. I’m just glad they did it in Texas. I think they should, by all means, face Texas justice for what they have done.
