cris hoerigDecorated War Hero Major Karl Hoerig flew nearly 200 combat missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He was in the Air Force Reserves and flew Hercules C-130s. He was stationed in Youngstown Air Force base in Ohio. Following his service to the country he continued working part-time with the reserves while working as a pilot for Southwestern Airline.

Major Hoerig meet his wife Claudia (known as Cris) online and married her in Las Vegas in 2004. It was a rocky and unhappy marriage and Major Hoerig planned on leaving his Brazilian born wife on March 12, 2007. Instead, he was shot three times, twice in the back as he sat on the stairs tying his shoes and once at close range in the back of his head. He was left in the basement of his house, his bank accounts were emptied and his wife disappeared.

His wife, Cris, used her privileges as a pilots wife to fly to New York and then to Brazil on the day of Hoerig’s murder. Brazil is refusing to extradite her back to the United States to faces charges for the murder of her husband.

Hoerig’s Congressman, Tim Ryan, is working on putting pressure on Brazil to extradite Cris Hoerig.

Tim Ryan is ready to introduce legislation which will put pressure on the Brazilian government. He says two pieces have been drafted that would call for re-negotiating the US/Brazil Treaty, and limit foreign aid to that country.Last year the United States gave 14 million dollars to Brazil. Congressman Ryan is prepared to introduce the legislation if Brazil refuses to extradite Hoerig, and will also be working on legislation to put restrictions on people traveling from Brazil to the United States as well as tariffs on Brazilian products. “If they say she is not coming back, we drop the legislation immediately, ” Ryan told reporters. “They need to know we are fed up.” Claudia Christina Hoerig has dual citizenship in the United States and Brazil and is hiding behind Brazilian policy that allows the country to refuse extradition of its citizens.
