Fred Thompson is closing up shop and heading back to his home in Virginia. He is to make a formal announcement tonight or tomorrow. His campaign has not closed the door to a possibility of his being someone’s vice-presidential running mate. He has not made an official endorsement of any candidate. There are rumors that he’s going to throw his support behind John McCain.

McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:

“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from ourhaving made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
