Its been really amazing to me to watch the vehement animosity with which some conservatives have gone after John McCain. I would have expected that from far left socialists democrats, but not from what I generally think of as more practical and logical thinking conservatives. Yet, many people seem to be more than willing to believe out right lies and rumors about John McCain, his background, his voting record and whatever else is said.

Romney and his supporters have had to backtrack more than a few times over rumors that have been traced back to them. Its really nasty business. John McCain is a warrior and certainly doesn’t need me to come to his defense, but this particular rumor is particularly repulsive because there is absolutely no basis in fact. It is woven out of whole cloth with no regard to the truth.

This is another instance in which Romney supporters of conscious have had to come out and set the record straight in order to save their own dignity and honor. I appreciate the fact that many have the integrity to come out and call this a lie.

A few days ago, an article came to our attention claiming that there was evidence that John McCain collaborated with the communists during his captivity. The article was detailed and specific…and it appears to have been a complete fabrication and libel.

In our post on this, we also said that if this article were untrue, its author, Dr. Jack Wheeler, should be shunned from public discourse. Well, it’s untrue.

Unless he has a damn good explanation for why he wrote this…or he is completely and abjectly apologetic, he really should never be taken seriously ever again.

I had never heard of Jack Wheeler or To The Point prior to this, but if this is the level of work he does - making up and spreading lies - than I certainly am not interested in getting to know him or his website any more.

Romney is on television right now having to backtrack and take back slams he’s made against McCain. He keeps getting caught up in his own petard. The problem is that once the information is out there, especially once its all over the blogs, many people take it as fact without looking into it any further to verify the truthfulness of it.

The Pink Flamingo has a much more thorough post about this issue. Ed Morrissey is a Romney supporter and has the integrity to slam this Wheeler for spreading out and out lies. Beth at My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy has more as well. The Anchoress wants to know why people are so passionate about Romney - all of the sudden.

I’m really perplexed about the hatred for McCain. His record is much more conservative than Romney, but many conservatives are declaring that the opposite is true. Have people forgotten that Romney was pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-same sex marriage and more? Apparently they have. He didn’t get elected governor of the most liberal state in the Union by being conservative. His stances changed when he decided to run for President. McCain has been consistent. No, I don’t agree with everything McCain has said and done, but I don’t expect to. I want a leader. We are at war and we need a warrior for President. McCain is a warrior. McCain is known as a ‘maverick’ which simply means he’s willing to do the unpopular thing to stand on his principles. I respect that in someone. I don’t want someone in office who will do whatever is the most politically expedient thing for them to do at that moment. I can assure you, our enemies will be shaking in their proverbial boots when they see John McCain taking the Oath of Office.
