NFL players missing
Oakland Raiders’ linebacker Victor “Marquis” Cooper, Detroit Lion’s defensive end Corey Smith, along with Nick Skyler and another unidentified 4th man have been reported missing while on a fishing trip in Florida. Read about and see photos below.
A Coast Guard 47-foot motor-life boat crew from Station Sand Key, Fla., HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and C-130 Hercules fixed-wing aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, and the Coast Guard Cutter Crocodile are searching a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass for the missing boaters
.
Victor “Marquis” Cooper began with the NFL as a third round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004 and signed with the Oakland Raiders last Nov., 2008. He is 26 years old.
Corey Smith is defensive end for the Detroit Lions. Born October 2, 1979 in Richmond, Va., he is 29 and has been with the NFL for 6 years.
A friend reported the 4 missing after they failed to return from a fishing trip yesterday. They were last seen leaving on a 21 foot boat from Clearwater Pass at 6:30am February 28th. They had planned on returning by dark, but have not.
The Coast Guard was notified at 1:30 am this morning.
While the Coast Guard has reported extremely choppy waters in the area, we will hope and pray that these 4 simply ran out of gas, or perhaps became lost … many folks decide to take little side trips while out on the beautiful waters of Florida. We will keep you updated.

This is so sad for these players and their families. The sea is a vast and dangerous place, its too easy for accidents like this to happen.

OH no - I didn’t know they called off the search. That’s terrible. I think ppl underestimate just how vast and dangerous the oceans are. I know someone else who went out off the coast of Florida a few years ago in a row boat (of all things). They found them (2 boys) weeks later.
