Iran Test Fires Missile

We have sat back and watched as the Iranian regime of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ayatollah Khamenei have moved steadily towards developing nuclear weapons and threatened to destroy Israel and the United States. We have watched as they have displayed their military might, thumbing their noses at the world community that has imposed sanctions and demanded they give up their plans of destroying the West. We have ignored and denied that they have been fighting our military in Iraq or anywhere else that the American military chooses as a battlefield.

The left has blamed the Bush Administration for whatever belligerent and blustering statements made by Ahmadinejad. They have ignored his threats, as though he doesn’t mean what he has said. In fact, if only we were nicer to them, then they’d be nicer to us. Right? That seems to be the thinking of the left.

And so, now, Obama has been wheeling and dealing with Iran. He says he hasn’t, but there are rumors to the contrary. Particularly, that he has asked Russia for help with Iran. That was pretty embarrassing in and of itself.

Most recently, Obama reached out to Iran with an olive branch, letting them know that we will talk with them if they just quit threatening to kill us. Here again, the thinking seems to be that we are the source of every problem, so if we just reach out people will be so grateful that they will bow at our feet and thank us. Instead, Iran responded to that offer with another show of military might. They test fired a missile today.

A top Iranian military commander last week said that Iranian missiles could now reach Israeli nuclear sites. Iran has often said it has missiles able to reach the Jewish state but had not previously mentioned such specific targets.

Threats from Iran have included that they will close target U.S. interests and Israel. They also threaten to close down the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway between the Gulf and the Sea of Oman that is used to transport 40% of the world’s oil.

And so, this is how Iran has responded to Obama’s efforts at negotiating peace with them. He and his followers have been so adamant that the U.S. has gone about everything so wrong before. Now that they are in power, is it being handled better? Is there more peace? Is there more prosperity? Will there be a universal group hug and forgiveness for all the the perceived past sins of the United States?

I think not. It seems that today’s missile tests are a message as much as anything else. Its a response to Obama’s arrogance at thinking all he had to do was reach out to them and they’d come running to him. Its a clear message that they can and will cut off oil supplies if we don’t do as they want. The question is, what will Obama do. Will he have the courage to call their bluff? Or will he submit?
