John Murtha Navy Distinguished Public Service Award
Pennsylvania Democratic Congressman John Murtha has been awarded the highest civilian honor by the Navy, the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award. This action has created a firestorm of controversy, primarily because of Murtha’s role in undermining the Marine Corps with false accusations in order to win a political campaign. Read about it below and see a photo and video.
Its hard to fathom why John Murtha has been repeatedly re-elected by his constituency in Pennsylvania. Okay, I get it. He brings a lot of pork back to his district. But one does wonder at what point even the money he brings in not make up for the shame he brings on himself and the Pennsylvania district he has been elected 19 times to represent?
During the most resent Presidential election, he called the people of his own district ‘racist’ and ‘rednecks’ and still they re-elected him. I really had hoped that even if the people of his district could over look his disdain for the military, his history of corruption, his overall embarrassing lack of ethics or hesitance to bleed taxpayers dry to contribute to his own wealth. Apparently, his saving grace is that he funnels enough tax payer money back to Pennsylvania that they are willing to over look his numerous flaws as a human being.
But why, in heaven’s name, would Navy Secretary Donald Winter award John Murtha the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award? Winter did this on March 13th, one of his last acts as Secretary, just before he left office. There just has to be a reason to explain it that we aren’t privy to. Winter awarded Murtha the Navy’s highest civilian honor citing Murtha as “courageous leadership, vision, and loyalty to the men and women of the Department of the Navy”. Murtha is Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s defense panel. Maybe that has something to do with it. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what kind of position Winter gets after leaving office.
Here’s the real irony of John Murtha being awarded this honor. It is awarded to ….
… “those extraordinary cases where individuals have demonstrated exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or the Department of the Navy as a whole.”
John Murtha? The irony of that is astounding.
Murtha released this statement after receiving the award.
“I’m proud of the service and sacrifices our troops are making, and I’m honored to receive this distinguished award from the Navy,” commented Murtha. “We have an obligation to ensure that our men and women in uniform have the most modern equipment, effective training, first-class medical care, and family advocacy resources.”
Disgusting hypocrite.
John Murtha was a primary contributor to the undermining of the Marine Corps and its mission in Iraq when he used eight good Marines to create anti-war sentiment in the public in order to facilitate the democratic take over of Congress in 2006. Murtha shamelessly and publicly accused Marines of ‘killing in cold blood’ in a fire battle in the town of Haditha, Iraq. It became known as the ‘Haditha incident’. In many people’s minds, the facts as told by John Murtha, a Representative in the United States Congress and former Marine himself. Without facts or proof, he accused eight Marines of killing women and children in Haditha. His accusations resulted in the imprisonment of those Marines at Camp Pendleton for two years while they awaited trial. His accusations resulted in a public outcry against the Marines, the loss of their careers, their incomes, their reputations and their freedom. His accusations still stand as ‘truth’ even though they have been PROVEN to have been false.
All of the Marines John Murtha accused for his own political benefit have been acquitted of the charges Murtha’s accusations caused to be brought against them. The United States lost 8 good Marines, lost prestige and the accused Marines lost everything. Their acquittals have not made the news that the accusations made. The vile and despicable Murtha has refused to apologize to them or their families.
He has refused to comment on their acquittals using the excuse that the cases are being adjudicated. That didn’t stop him from commenting extensively while these men were still in Iraq serving our country. It didn’t stop him from accusing them when there had been no trial whatsoever. It did help get the democrats in control of Congress in 2006, and we see how that has served our country. Unfortunately for Murtha, Nancy Pelosi reneged on her promise to make him House Majority Leader. It seems he sold his soul on the promise of someone as dishonorable as he is.
Are you outraged at this? If so, there is a petition you can sign to ask the Navy to reconsider and rescind this award to The Saboteur John Murtha. Please, go sign it.
We don’t have the main stream media to help us form public opinion. We are having to claw our way uphill and against huge odds to get the truth to the public. But we can’t let the fact that we are Davids fighting Goliaths stop us. We have to keep fighting. Its all we can do. Its what we have to do for our country, for our Soldiers and Marines and for the hope of our children’s futures.
Here is the Vets for Freedom statement.
“Congressman John Murtha should apologize for slandering the Marines of [3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment], and for undermining the efforts of those servicemen and women who fought in Iraq,” the online petition states. “If he does not, the Secretary of the Navy should rescind this award as a sign of his unwavering support for those who served in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.”

Great post Beth. We’ve seen the Marine Corps brass do some very un-Marine things recently (remember the Haditha fiasco), and now this. Wonder what this Commandant is smoking.
