Carrie Prejean is Miss California. She didn’t win the Miss USA pageant last night, but she created such a controversy over her answer to a question on gay marriage that she’s all anyone is talking about today. It all started when celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton asked her a controversial question during the competition. It went downhill from there. Read about it below, see lots of pictures of Ms. Prejean and a video of her run in with Perez.

The last thing anyone expects at a Miss USA pageant is controversy. The most you might hope for is that someone will have a wardrobe malfunction or something of the sort. These beauty pageants are for beautiful women to strut around in swimsuits with high heels and lipstick on. That’s what they are for.

Usually, the ‘tough’ questions have to do with asking a contestants what she’ll do about world hunger should she win the contest. The expected answer is that she’ll spend her year traveling the world doing good as a proud and beautiful representative of the United States. We then promptly forget them and they do whatever it is they do after they win, wearing a tiara and perfect manicure at all times.

Then someone thought it was a good idea to put the controversial and gay celebrity blogger Perez Hilton on the judges panel. He, not surprisingly, decided to ask one of ‘those’ questions that aren’t supposed to be asked of beautiful women on stage with high heels, lipstick, perfect coifs and bodies to die for. Here’s the exchange between Carrie Prejean, Miss California and the judge, Perez Hilton.

PEREZ: Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?

CARRIE: I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land that you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what, in my country and my family I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a woman.

She clearly came down on the side of “opposite marriage,” basically saying “no offense but your lifestyle isn’t valid.” I’m guessing Perez didn’t give her his vote, but Carrie still managed to finish as first runner up in the pageant.

I actually thought she did well, considering it was a beauty pageant and not a presidential debate. I mean, what was she supposed to say? Well … Perez didn’t like her answer AT ALL. In fact, today on his blog, in a video blog, he called her a ‘dumb bitch’.

Apparently, the pageant people were not happy with him injecting serious, controversial issues into the pageant either. There was some nastiness backstage between Hilton and the pageant organizers. Leftist bloggers are gunning for Miss California. People who otherwise didn’t even know there was a beauty pageant last night are acting as though this 21-year-old blond California beauty is the final authority on gay rights in the United States.

A couple of things happened in the whole Miss California gay marriage controversy. The Miss USA pageant has gotten at least three times the publicity it usually gets. Perez Hilton’s blog has probably gotten at least twice his usual traffic. Everybody is talking about Carrie Prejean, even though she came in first runner up and didn’t win. And hardly anyone knows who actually did win.

So who won Miss USA last night? Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton was named Miss USA 2009.

There you have it.
