USS Freedom

The USS Freedom (LCS 1), is the first of the United States Navy’s next generation littoral combat ships. These are ships that are built to operate close to shore, in rivers and ports. It is built for modern warfare and is a perfect vessel for combating pirates along the Somalian coast and just about anyone else who doesn’t have our best interest at heart.

These ships are revolutionary in design. The USS Freedom is 377-feet and was built by Lockheed Martin. It can reach speeds over 40 knots, making it one of the fastest ships in the U.S. Naval fleet. It is built to house and launch two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters as well as small boats from the stern ramp. It has the capacity to engage in anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, surface warfare, surveillance and reconnaissance. It needs a crew of only about 40 Sailors because of the advanced technology used on board.

Commander Michael Doran says its like driving a sports car. Its being called the Navy’s corvette.

Pirates on the high seas have had an advantage with their speed and agility. The arrival of Littoral combat ships will change that dynamic.

The USS Freedom was ordered in 2004 while President George W. Bush was in office. The Secretary of Defense approved building 55 ships by the same model.

Naturally, the United States is proud of this magnificent ship and is making her available for public viewing. She’ll be in port in Alexandria, Virginia on May 8th and 9th, 2009. Her home port will be in San Diego.
