Terrorist Rehabilitation Program?

It seems that the Obama Administration is considering sending 100 Yemeni Gitmo detainees to the Saudi Arabia Terrorist Rehabilitation Program. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said he’s spoken to Saudi Assistant Minister of the Interior Muhammed bin Nayaf about it. It seems this is a touchy-feely therapy program to help terrorists understand the error of their ways. They get to talk about their feelings and are taught the real meaning of the Koran. When and if they ever graduate from the program, they are given an apartment, money and sometimes wives to get started on a new life.

When Gates was asked if the graduates of this terrorist rehab program would remain in Saudi Arabia and be monitored, he replied they didn’t really cover that in their talks. Does that make you feel safer?

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Salih wouldn’t comment on the idea of sending Yemeni citizens and enemy combatants to terrorist reeducation camps in Saudi Arabia. However, the former Commander of the USS Cole, Kirk Lippold issued a statement:

“the impact of turning Yemeni detainees over to either Saudi Arabia or Yemen is an unacceptable compromise to our national security. … Transferring Yemeni detainees to Saudi Arabia will inevitably lead to more terrorists on the battlefield endangering the lives of our military for a second time.”

There’s no good records of how well the program has worked. We do know that 11 terrorists who went through the Saudi Arabian therapy program have returned to their jihad against the West. That includes Said Ali al-Shihri, a Saudi national who is a graduate of the Saudi Terrorist Rehabilitation Program. He was released from Gitmo in November 2007 and after completing the reeducation program, is now the deputy leader of the Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda. He’s also suspected of masterminding last year’s attack on the U.S. Embassy in Yemen.

Of course, regardless of the danger this might pose to our national security, the left is absolutely certain that anything is better than having these terrorist continue to be confined in Guantanamo Bay. You know, Saudi Arabian law is so much more civilized and humane than the way we Westerners behave. After all, in the eyes of the left we’re the bad guys and all.
