Dog drags baby from crib

Michael and Chrissie Smith of Nicholasville, Kentucky, had just brought their newborn baby home. They call their new son A.J., short for his name, Alexander James Smith. When they got home from the hospital, they laid him in his crib and went back to the kitchen to finish making a list of baby supplies they needed to buy. Michael was preparing to go to the store and Chrissie went back upstairs to check on the baby. When she got upstairs, the baby was gone and so was the family’s dog.

The parents frantically searched their two acre back yard for the baby. Michael Smith has stated that he knew their dog, a Native American Indian Dog (a breed with wolves in their ancestry), was in the habit of taking items from the house and stowing them away in the woods behind the house. While the father was on the phone with 911, he spotted his baby in the jaws of the dog in a heavily wooded area behind the house. The newborn was bleeding from his mouth.

The baby was rushed to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, where he remains in critical condition. He is in NICU with two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture, broken ribs and various cuts and bruises. At this point, it is expected that he will survive, although it was not certain he would in the beginning.

The Smith’s say that the dog was carrying the baby in the same manner as he would a puppy. But obviously, baby’s are made to be carried that way. Regardless, they don’t want the dog back in their home. The dog, named Dakota, will probably be destroyed. The dog is in the custody of the Jessamine County Animal Control.
