Alexander James Smith was just four days old when the family dog, a Native American Indian Dog, dragged him from his crib and carried him in his mouth out into the woods behind the home. The newborn is in critical condition after being snatched by the dog. Read about it below and see a photo of the type of dog as well as a video.
Michael and Chrissie Smith of Nicholasville, Kentucky, had just brought their newborn baby home. They call their new son A.J., short for his name, Alexander James Smith. When they got home from the hospital, they laid him in his crib and went back to the kitchen to finish making a list of baby supplies they needed to buy. Michael was preparing to go to the store and Chrissie went back upstairs to check on the baby. When she got upstairs, the baby was gone and so was the family’s dog.
The parents frantically searched their two acre back yard for the baby. Michael Smith has stated that he knew their dog, a Native American Indian Dog (a breed with wolves in their ancestry), was in the habit of taking items from the house and stowing them away in the woods behind the house. While the father was on the phone with 911, he spotted his baby in the jaws of the dog in a heavily wooded area behind the house. The newborn was bleeding from his mouth.
The baby was rushed to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, where he remains in critical condition. He is in NICU with two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture, broken ribs and various cuts and bruises. At this point, it is expected that he will survive, although it was not certain he would in the beginning.
The Smith’s say that the dog was carrying the baby in the same manner as he would a puppy. But obviously, baby’s are made to be carried that way. Regardless, they don’t want the dog back in their home. The dog, named Dakota, will probably be destroyed. The dog is in the custody of the Jessamine County Animal Control.

First, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the child.BUT,
though scary as it may seem, and wounded the baby was, you cannot kill the animal because YOU NEGLECTED TO KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CHILD. It does not matter if the dog is 3lbs. or 100 lbs. ITS A DOG and they do things unexpectedly sometimes. Especially a 4 day old child. This is a case of child NEGLECT. Those who don’t know already, NEVER leave a dog around children unattended by an adult.

That’s not child neglect. A lot of people have pets. Why would you think the dog would get the baby in the few minutes he was laid down?

How did a dog grasp the baby and lift it out of a crib? Shouldn’t a screaming baby alert the parents that something was very wrong? Certainly this child cried as it was repeatedly bitten and carried through this house and then outside. Childrens services please investigate carefully before placing this fragile newborn back in this home. The story does not ad up. The parents are responsible for the injured baby as well as the dog that will likely be put down. After tasting blood this animal will never be fit to be around any child. It’s unfortunate for all concerned but it is a safety issue. Use this as a lesson. Parents that are expecting, make plans prior to bringing a baby home. Don’t risk what you can’t afford to lose, your newborn’s life!
