Evita Peron was just 33-years-old when she died of cervical cancer in 1952. She was the beloved First Lady of Argentina when she died and had been since 1946 until her death. She was known as Eva Perón, or as Evita, the Spanish diminutive with translates literally as ‘Little Eva’. She became widely known to the rest of the modern world through the musical about her life, ‘Evita’, played on film by Madonna.
María Eva Duarte de Perón was born on May 7, 1919 in rural Argentina as the illegitimate child of the mistress of a middle class businessman. When she was just 15-years-old, Eva Duarte went to Buenos Aires to pursue a career as an actress. She worked dance halls, modeling and bit parts on stage. Primarily worked her way through a series of men until she met Colonel Juan Domingo Peron in 1944. She became Peron’s second wife in 1945.
Evita has been portrayed as the driving force behind Person’s political career. He became president of Argentina in 1946 and she became actively involved in politics. She portrayed herself and one of the people, a champion of the people. She became a powerful player in Argentine politics, popular with the trade unions. She founded the charitable Eva Peron Foundations and the Female Peronist Party, the nation’s first large-scale female political party.
Eva expressed ambitions of her own, primarily to be named Vice-President of Argentina. She was opposed by the military and elite in her quest for power. All of that became irrelevant when she became ill. Shortly before her death, her husband gave her the official title of ‘Spiritual Leader of the Nation’. Evita died June 26, 1952 and became something of an icon for the Argentine people.
