Los Angeles Galaxy soccer star Landon Donovan has tested positive for H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu. Read about it below and see photos and a video.
Los Angeles Galaxy soccer star Landon Donovan got the news this past Thursday that he has tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus. He is reported to have been feeling ill since his team was at training camp in Florida a week ago.
He told Sports Illustrated that he was feeling sick while in Miami and went to the doctor who confirmed that he has swine flu. He said he had never felt so bad, reporting that he just felt lethargic and slow.
He played in the World Cup qualifying match in Azteca stadium against Mexico on Wednesday before he was diagnosed on Thursday. He assisted Charlie Davies in a goal that put the USA in the lead in Azteca, but tired and started trailing defensively, leading to Mexico winning late in the match.
Donovan had hoped to feel well enough to play this weekend against the Seattle Sounders, but there are concerns about spreading the virus to his teammates. The Center for Disease Control reports that the virus may no longer be contagious a week after the onset of symptoms, providing that the symptoms have stopped by that time. Typically, the symptoms of L1N1 are fever and chills.
Concerns about a swine flu epidemic are rampant. India has had a number of cases and closed down schools. Cases of the virus have been reported world wide. Some people claim that the fear of a pandemic is being spread in order to help Obama pass his health care reform bills. However, most of the concerns seem to be well founded as more cases are being reported throughout the world.
