Mayor Tom Barrett was attending the Wisconsin State Fair when he tried to help a grandmother and 1 year old child in what authorities are calling a domestic dispute. As Barrett and his family left the Fair they heard a woman shouting for someone to call 911.

The Milwaukee Mayor hospitalized since Friday when the attack occurred, found the woman trying to protect a 1 year old from a 20 year old man. He reportedly said, “Let’s all cool down here, I’m going to call 911”. That’s when the man hit the Mayor with a metal pipe in the head and torso.

The Mayor apparently fought back, fracturing his hand in the incident. Tom Barrett had insisted on attending the Fair without security since it wasn’t official city business. The suspect was apprehended on Sunday, they also recovered the metal pipe used in the attack. The woman and child were not hurt in the incident.

Mayor Tom Barrett is a possible democratic candidate for Governor in 2010, he won re-election in 2004 with nearly 80% of the vote. The Milwaukee Mayor hospitalized until at least Monday, says his only regret is that his family had to witness the attack.
