The list composed by Forbes factors such things as economic impact, media reach and career accomplishments. Angela Merkel, became the first woman Chancellor of Germany in 2005 and is expected to retain power in the upcoming elections in September. From Forbes:

“Women in power are rising to leadership positions in business, government and philanthropy by making daring and unconventional moves,” Forbes said. “Gone are the days of women feeling they must stick with one employer and patiently wait for promotions.”

Coming in at number 36 is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, one spot behind Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; Michelle Obama comes in at #40. The most powerful woman in the world, Angela Merkel, has not been too cozy with President Obama to start off.
There was much speculation of a rift between the two leaders a couple months back when Obama made a trip to Europe.

Just for kicks, tells us who you think the most powerful woman should be. I personally feel Sheila Bair should have edged out Angela Merkel. Think about it she’s the head of the FDIC for crying out loud. Although a strong case could be made for Angela Merkel, taking the top spot again; she’s a strong conservative leader in a region full of not so strong male counterparts.

The Forbes most powerful women list is a pretty accurate reading of women in the world today. Until someone proves otherwise, Angela Merkel is a good choice for the top spot.
