There is a huge Denver snowstorm blasting the mountain area. It makes me cold just to think about it. A good friend of ours in Denver says the snow is coming down hard and fast and the wind is fierce.

As I sit in the sunny South, I can’t help but feel for those who live near the Continental Divide and are looking at well below freezing temperatures, a foot of snow and high winds. Denver is experiencing it’s first major snowstorm of the season and is under a winter storm advisory. By Thursday evening the foothills could see as much as 24 inches of snow and Denver 10 to 18 inches of snow. Burr.

The 9NEWS Weather Team expects a grand total of 10 to 18 inches of snow by Thursday evening for Denver and the Interstate 25 corridor from Monument Hill north to Cheyenne. The highest snow amounts will near the base of the foothills and over the Palmer Divide in Douglas and Elbert Counties.

The foothills could see up to 24 inches of total snow accumulation by late Thursday while mountain areas east of Vail Pass will see up to 3 feet over the highest peaks and passes. Most mountain communities such as Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Vail, and Aspen will be in the 10 to 20 inch range.

Colorado Department of Transportation reports that crews are plowing the roads. With overnight refreezing, they are expected to be hazardous. The blizzard is affecting air travel into and out of the Denver airport. Work crews are attempting to keep the runways cleared, but it’s growing increasingly difficult to keep up with the expected two feet of snow and drifting in the high winds.

This October snowstorm is expected to affect Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle as well as Colorado.

As of this time, The Denver Nuggets season opener is still on at the Pepsi Center in spite of the snow.

The area’s first H1N1 flu vaccine clinic has been postponed.
