James Roppo, Man Arrested for Not Tweeting Cancellation of Justin Bieber Event (Photos)
Island Def Jam Records Executive James Roppo was arrested on Friday for not tweeting the cancellation of a Justin Bieber event. Bieber was scheduled to sign autographs at a mall that day, but when over 10,000 fans showed up and got out-of-control the police canceled the event. Roppo continued to tweet about the autograph signing even after it was canceled and ended up being arrested for reckless endangerment among other crimes.
Teenage heartthrob Justin Bieber was scheduled to meet fans at Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, Long Island, New York on Friday, November 20, 2009. He was promoting his new album ‘My World’ at the clothing store Justice there. He is signed with the label Island Def Jam Records and they were promoting it online. James Roppo is the 44-year-old senior vice president of sales with the record label and sent out messages on the internet to over 3,000 Justin Beiber fans. The plan was for him to sign autographs, hand out yellow bracelets. But the event was not to happen.
After tweeting about the event, word spread throughout the world of Twitter and over the internet. Pre-teen and teenage girls started showing up to stand in line for their autographs, yellow bracelets and with hopes of meeting their teen idol at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. By 4 p.m. there were over 10,000 fans waiting in line for a chance to meet the Canadian YouTube sensation and things started getting out of control.
The teenagers waiting to see Beiber were screaming and becoming more excited and hysterical. The crowd started rushing the rope that was intended to hold them back. Some teens were pushed to the floor in the ensuing stampede. The police and fire marshal canceled the event out of concern for the safety of the crowd.
Beiber tweeted to his fans that the event was canceled and asked them to go home and calm down. However, James Roppo failed to tweet that the event was canceled. In fact, there are tweets about the event even after authorities had canceled it. He is currently facing charges of reckless endangerment, criminal nuisance, obstruction of governmental administration and endangering the welfare of children.
The only injuries incurred during the melee were the dramatically broken hearts and teary faces of the teenage girls who were denied the opportunity to meet the object of their affections. Oh, and James Roppo will forever be known as the man arrested for not tweeting the cancellation of a Justin Beiber event.
Below are some photos of Beiber. There’s also a video of the crowds at the mall. Maybe you can see what the pre-teen and teen girls see in him?
